PLA vs ABS: An Honest Comparison for 2026

This used to be THE filament debate. In 2026 it mostly isn't — but ABS still owns a few jobs that nothing else does cheaply.
The short answer
- PLA for almost everything visual, most prototypes, and any rigid part that stays under ~55°C.
- ABS for heat, acetone vapor smoothing, and parts you'll machine — if you have an enclosure and ventilation.
- If you're choosing ABS for strength alone, PETG or tough-PLA blends probably serve you better with none of the hassle.
Stiffness vs survivability
At room temperature, PLA is stiffer and prints dimensionally truer. ABS is less stiff but far more impact-resistant and heat-tolerant — it bends and survives where PLA snaps or sags. A car dashboard ruins PLA in an afternoon; ABS shrugs it off.
Printability is not close
PLA prints on anything: 190-220°C, cold-tolerant, no enclosure, minimal warp. ABS demands a hot bed, a closed chamber, and patience — and emits styrene while doing it. The hidden cost of ABS isn't the spool price; it's the failed prints on open hardware.
Post-processing
ABS's superpower: acetone vapor melting the surface into injection-molded smoothness, plus easy sanding, drilling, and tapping. PLA tolerates light sanding at best.
