Your first spools shape whether the printer becomes a hobby or a shelf ornament. The goal early on isn't the best filament β€” it's the most predictable one.

Basic PLA, major brand, 1.75mm, light gray or white. Nothing else competes for spool one:

  • It prints at low temperature on any machine, with no enclosure.
  • It barely warps, so first-layer problems are YOUR problems β€” fixable, learnable ones.
  • It's cheap enough that wasted prints don't sting.

Skip silk, glow, glitter, wood, and carbon-fiber anything for now β€” every specialty additive makes filament harder to print, and you can't yet tell whose fault a failure is. Come back to the best silk PLA filaments once plain PLA prints clean.

What actually matters in a beginner spool

  1. Diameter consistency (Β±0.03mm or tighter) β€” inconsistent filament causes random under/over-extrusion that no slicer setting fixes.

A plain (not silk, not glitter) PLA in a light color from a major brand. Light colors hide layer lines less but show problems clearly, which is what you want while learning.
How many spools should I start with?
Two or three 1kg spools of basic PLA. You will waste filament learning β€” better to waste $20 PLA than $35 specialty material.
When should I try PETG?
After PLA prints come out clean consistently β€” usually a few weeks in. PETG adds real durability for functional parts with only a small jump in difficulty.
Are cheap no-name spools okay for learning?
