Silk PLA trades mechanical performance for looks: the additive gives prints a lustrous, almost metallic sheen straight off the bed.
It's purely decorative — popular for vases, statues, and “silk rainbow” gradients where the glossy finish is the whole point.
Strengths & trade-offs

- Visually hides layer lines
- Vivid color
- Great for display pieces
- Prints at PLA ease
- Weaker layer adhesion and strength than plain PLA
- The additive can clog and ooze
- Needs slightly higher temps
- Not for functional parts

Did you know
- The “silk” sheen is a surface flow effect — it is mechanically weaker, not stronger, than ordinary PLA.
- Vendors don't disclose the additive, so the exact chemistry behind the shine is genuinely opaque.
