PVA

Polyvinyl Alcohol

Water-soluble support material for dual-extruder printing — supports dissolve away for clean complex geometry.

PVA's superpower is that it simply dissolves in water — a dual-extruder printer lays PVA supports under complex overhangs, and you wash them away afterward, leaving surfaces no mechanical support could match.

It pairs especially well with PLA. Its weakness is the flip side of its strength: it's extremely hygroscopic and clogs or degrades if it absorbs ambient moisture.

Strengths & trade-offs

  • Fully water-soluble — no mechanical support removal
  • Leaves clean surfaces and internal cavities
  • Pairs well with PLA
  • Non-toxic
  • Great for complex multi-material prints
  • Extremely hygroscopic — clogs and degrades fast
  • Expensive
  • Narrow temp window (can carbonize)
  • Requires dual extrusion
  • Dissolving takes time

Did you know

  • PVA dissolves in plain tap water — no solvents — which is why it's the cleanest support option.
  • It's the same polymer used in dissolvable laundry-detergent pods.
  • PVA is so moisture-hungry it can clog mid-print from humid room air.
